Will I see my beloved pet in Heaven?

This is a question I had in early 2017 when our family dog Yuki died. I was referred to a book called “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. In searching for my answer, I ended up reading the entire book, and have since given it as a gift to other people. The book is one of the best I have ever read on any subject.

Our dog Yuki came to us in 2008 after my wife and our current exchange student Azusa asked to go to the local SPCA to see a Bichon that was being kept there. I remember my wife saying, “He won’t last long there. We just want to look. We won’t bring a dog home with us.” Famous last words. My wife even told Azusa, “If you cry a little, I think dad will cave in.” So, we went to the SPCA and saw the dog. The lady there suggested taking him for a walk to see how he behaved. Of course, he behaved well. And the next thing you know, my wife is taking out her checkbook to buy him. On the drive home, someone asked, “What are we going to call him?” I asked Azusa, “How do you say ‘snowflake’ in Japanese?” It was a long word. So, I asked, “How do you say ‘snow’?” Yuki means ‘snow’ in Japanese. So that is how he got his name. Within one minute of arriving home, I wanted to call him ‘Mud.’ He squatted in the center of the living room and relieved himself. Luckily that was the only time he did that.

Yuki was a very healthy dog until the last year or two of his life. He started to have seizures and we were giving him medication 4-5 times a day. Yuki was with us nine years. We buried him in our back yard and I always talk to him when I mow the lawn where he is buried.

Now back to the question. Will I see Yuki in Heaven?  Even though the Bible does not explicitly state that pets go to Heaven, it is the author’s view, and mine as well, that we will see our beloved pets again. The rationale is that since God is a loving God and he knows how much our pets mean to us, there would be no reason why our pets would not be in Heaven. They give us so much love and allow us to love them in return. Why would something as wonderful as this not be in Heaven? Why would God give us something so wonderful on this broken planet and deny it in Heaven? I don’t believe He would deny us something that gives us such joy. For those of you that miss your pets as much as I do, I believe you will see them again.

Genesis 1:25- God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all creatures that move along the ground according their kinds.  And God Saw that it was good.
