What is family?

To most people, when they think about family, they think of their biological family. However, I think there are extensions to this definition that are just as meaningful.

In my own case, my wife and I have hosted many foreign exchange students over the years, and those kids and their biological families are considered part of our family. We have always treated them as such and will always do so. Our Korean daughter recently gave birth to our first grandson. During her pregnancy, we accompanied her to the doctor’s office for her regular checkups and were present when she discovered the sex of the baby. This is not something you do with just anyone.

Another extension of my family is my church family. These are people that I also live my life with and I feel that they are indeed family. I can call them up at any time and talk about problems in my life or ask for help. Such was the case about a year ago when I had just gotten out of the hospital after having had surgery. I could barely walk from the bedroom to the bathroom and so my wife was helping me during my recovery. Within 24 hours after getting home, my wife injured her back and was unable to do anything herself. My wife called her sister to take her to the doctor and I called someone in my church family who took the time to come over and watch me while my wife was at the doctor’s office. This person also made sure that we had food delivered by others from my church family for the next week. It was one of the greatest gifts I had ever received, as it helped my speed of recovery.

When you think of the word “family,” don’t just limit your view to the biological family. By doing so, you place limits on your life and what you can accomplish.
